Warren County sheriff warns about new scam targeting families of inmates
, Ky. (FOX 56) — The Warren County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of a new scam targeting family members of incarcerated people.

According to the sheriff’s office, the increasing popularity of mugshot pages on social media is allowing scammers to prey on the family members of those posted.

The office said a family member of someone who turned themselves in recently was contacted and told that the person was eligible for home incarceration due to jail overcrowding, before being asked for payment via apps like PayPal and then cryptocurrency.

The scammers are reportedly asking for a deposit of either $1,500, $2,000, or $3,000, depending on which “prototype” the family wanted.
