Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller announced National Farmers Market Week is taking place this week from Aug. 3 through Aug. 9.
“Our certified, GO TEXAN farmers markets are the best Texas has to offer,” said Commissioner Miller. “They provide fresh, healthy food grown right here in the Lone Star State, often just a few miles from where it’s sold. More than half of our vendors travel less than 10 miles to reach their market. You can’t find a better example of local support in action.”
Officials said the celebration features farmers markets across Texas and the role they play in supporting local Texas producers and healthier communities.
“Behind every item on a grocery store shelf is a farmer or rancher,” said Miller. “Farmers markets give you the opportunity to meet those producers in person, shake their hand, and buy straight from the source. It’s not just a purchase, it’s a personal connection.”
Certified Farmers Markets can be found on the Texas Department of Agriculture website.
