Suspect charged in Portland bias crime already in custody for separate incident

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Thanks to tips from the community, a suspect has been identified in the bias crime that targeted a Northeast Portland business on June 14.

The Portland Police Bureau announced the suspect has been identified as 38-year-old Joseph Thompson. He has been charged with second-degree bias crime.

Thompson was already being held at the Multnomah County Detention Center for bias crime charges from a separate incident.

In May, Thompson was charged after destroying the inside of a Papa Murphy’s restaurant and threatening employees. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries. A PPB officer criminally cited him and provided him with a future court date.

As KOIN 6 News previously reported, the suspect was caught on surveillance video spray painting a swastika on the door of Pulse Wellness Cooperative on June 14.

Thompson wasn’t booked into jail until July 1, when he was arrested for allegedly threatening people with a knife while yelling a racial slur.
