Dr. Rumelle Reyes is an ob/gyn who practices in the Philippines at Salcedo doctor’s hospital. She’s been in Chicago the last several days training. On Thursday she observed Dr. Magdy Milad in the operating room as he performs surgeries on patients with a variety of uterine issues, including a congenital condition where the uterus is divided in two sections by a wall of tissue, preventing conception.
Over the past year and a half, Dr. Milad and a team of Northwestern doctors and nurses specializing in women’s reproductive health have traveled to Dr. Reyes’ hospital in the Philippines 10 times treating patients and equipping the hospital with improved surgical equipment and medical supplies.
Dr. Reyes says she plans to bring the skills she’s learning in the U.S. back to the Philippines to help women who are trying to have babies.
“Imagine from a Third World country to a First Wolrd country and being able to bring back all of this information and skills,” she said. “This is really a big thing.”
The hospital in the Philippines is getting many upgrades thanks to a $230,000 grant from Northwestern.
