MCSO says a 38-year-old Hispanic man was found unresponsive around 12:06 p.m. on Wednesday, August 6. Medical staff were alerted and provided care to the inmate.
However, the man was pronounced dead around 12:44 p.m. MCSO says the man has been incarcerated at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center in Uptown since 2023.
More details will be released once his family has been notified.
“MCSO is devastated to announce the death of a resident who was in our custody and care,” said Sheriff Gary McFadden. “We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
Sheriff McFadden clarified that he learned of the incident on Thursday morning after a meeting with several pastors to speak about their concerns in the Latino community
The inmate’s death is under investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation.
