William McBride, 56, was arrested on Friday, August 1, and charged with aggravated arson following an investigation into a fire at an elderly and disabled housing complex in the 1000 block of North Reed Street.
The fire broke out shortly before 9 a.m. that morning. Officials said working smoke alarms alerted residents, allowing them to evacuate safely. No injuries were reported.
After a request for assistance, State Fire Marshal deputies responded to the scene and determined the fire had been intentionally set. McBride was later identified as the suspect and taken into custody.
The Office of State Fire Marshal thanked the Ville Platte Fire Department for its assistance in resolving the case.
The investigation remains ongoing.
