Louisiana 811 Day reminder: Safety first, call before you dig

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — As Louisiana approaches 811 Day on Aug. 11, it’s a timely reminder to always call 811 before you dig.

It’s a free service mandated by state law and essential for safety. Call 811 or submit a request online. This alerts utility companies to mark underground lines with paint and flags. It helps prevent injuries, service outages, and expensive repairs.

Billy Forest is the Damage Prevention Manager for Louisiana 811. He said homeowners should call 811, even for small projects like planting a tree or installing a mailbox. Not doing so could lead to someone hitting buried gas, power, or telecom lines.

Forest said every dig warrants a call to 811 to avoid danger and disruption.
