“Public safety is our number one priority. And so, it is my goal to make sure that we have more resources going to police and fire, our first responders. And, I want to, but whatever money we’re able to have increased raises for police and fire, but also better equipment and better technology,” the mayor said.
With a shrinking population, Horhn said city departments are in an assessment period, and the city has to make some tough financial decisions.
The mayor also cleared up confusion over the status of Thalia Mara Hall after the previous administration announced the facility reopened.
“Previous administration made an announcement, just in the outgoing moments of their tenure that said that Thalia Mara was back there. Thalia Mara is not back. It’s almost back, but it’s not back,” Horhn said.
He said funding is now in place to finish the work at Thalia Mara, and the venue should be ready for public use soon. Bookings are already underway.
“I expect that within the next month, month and a half, we’ll be able to announce that Thalia Mara is indeed open. The good thing, though, is that the Broadway company, that has been using Thalia Mara for a number of years to bring Broadway shows, has announced that they’re bringing seven shows back to Thalia Mara,” Horhn said.
With several challenges ahead, Horhn said his administration is focused on restoring public trust and getting Jackson back on track.
