Conshohocken steel mill to officially close after idling. What about Steelton?

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — In what union leaders consider a disappointing but unsurprising development, Cleveland Cliffs notified United Steelworkers (USW) leaders this week that the status of the company’s Conshohocken-area plant will change from “indefinite idle” to “closed” on Nov. 4.

The news was unsurprising following media reports earlier this week that the 66-acres site had been listed for sale, with an agent describing redevelopment possibilities for the land.

Officially, the site is in Plymouth Township, Montgomery County. It employed more than 100 people.

What about the company’s far larger idled mill in Steelton, Dauphin County?

The Steelton mill’s status remains “indefinite idle,” Larue Hess, president of USW local 1688, confirmed Wednesday.

Company leaders have previously said they consider the site marketable as an AI data center. A company spokesperson didn’t immediately respond Wednesday to a message seeking independent confirmation of the news about the Conshohocken plant and clarity regarding the Steelton plant’s status.

Some union leaders and workers have questioned the company’s assertions — less than a year after company leaders cited the plant, which opened in 1867 and was America’s longest continuously operating steel mill, as a good performer — that the idlings had nothing to do with tariffs recently imposed by President Donald Trump.

The White House has denied any connection between the tariffs and the plant idlings.

“No president has taken a greater interest in restoring the American steel industry’s dominance than President Trump, and his historic steel tariffs and shepherding of a U.S. Steel deal, which keeps the iconic company in America and under American control, reflect this commitment,” White House spokesman Kush Desai said in late July.

Cleveland Cliffs hasn’t responded to a message seeking clarity regarding what CEO Lourenco Goncalves meant when he told CNBC’s Jim Cramer Pennsylvania is “a place that doesn’t really support Cleveland Cliffs.”
