At 4:06 p.m., a Greensboro officer was flagged down by a resident in the 1600 block of Marion Street about a trespasser call.
The resident directed the officer toward a man who was suspected of trespassing on a nearby property.
The officer then started talking to the man, and the man refused to comply with repeated commands from the officer.
The man got a weapon and moved toward the officer, and the officer shot the man, police say.
The officer requested EMS and rendered aid. Despite the life-saving efforts, the man died at the scene.
As is standard protocol with critical incidents involving a death, the GPD requested the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to respond and conduct a criminal investigation into the incident.
The GPD’s Professional Standards Division will conduct an internal investigation to determine whether GPD policies were followed.
Under departmental policy, the officer involved has been placed on administrative duty.
