The American Humane Society has nominated Tiller, Peyton and Bubba for the Hero Dog Award.
Peyton and Bubba are both with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), while Tiller is a facility dog with the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) Police Department.
Tiller is a 4-year-old Labrador retriever and golden retriever mix who has been working with MWAA’s police department since 2023.
At the airports, he doesn’t sniff out drugs or bombs — he instead provides comfort to first responders, applying pressure to help relieve stress.
After the deadly January plane crash over the Potomac River, Tiller was there to do his job and support responders staying at the scene for days on end, recovering remains and the wreckage from the river.
“Tiller is one way, or one tool, to help to cope in the moment, in days and weeks following, trying to help normalize the way we feel about a particular incident. Sometimes no words need to be said. Just a couple of moments, or a couple of minutes, with Tiller can go a long way,” Tiller’s handler, MWAA Police Lt. Timothy Blayman, told DC News Now in May.
In a post on the X platform, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport said that Tiller “sparks joy everywhere he goes!”
In Peyton’s bio on the American Humane Society’s website, he is described as a dog who “tirelessly ensures the city’s safety with unwavering focus.”
“Peyton also has boundless energy and can take on a significant amount of work across the D.C. region to help ensure our Capital is protected. Known for his intelligence and friendly nature, Peyton is beloved by all who meet him,” the description said.
The American Humane Society said that during a security sweep, Peyton stayed focused and determined, ensuring many individuals’ safety.
“Beyond his lifesaving work, his joyful spirit and gentle nature remind everyone he meets that even the toughest jobs can be carried out with heart,” the description reads.
Bubba is a tracking dog with MPD, and he “exemplifies exceptional service and community dedication.” He spends his days finding both missing people and fugitives as well as participating in community events.
“His gentle nature, unwavering commitment and heroic spirit make him an invaluable partner and a beloved protector within the community,” his description stated.
Bubba participates in search and rescue calls, using his nose to help officers track individuals across long distances and difficult terrain.
“His unwavering focus and determination in these critical moments shows the heart of a true hero, always ready to serve and protect,” the American Humane Society’s website states.
