Rockcastle County elementary school hosts active shooter training

MOUNT VERNON, Ky. (FOX 56) — While the chances of a shooter getting into a school are generally low, they’re not zero, which is why first responders are always looking to stay a step ahead.

First responders from all sectors came to Roundstone Elementary on Wednesday, Aug. 6, for active shooter training led by the Kentucky State Police (KSP).

Detective Ryan Loudermilk said while the idea is to never have to use the training, he knows the Rockcastle County community will be ready because of it.

“They know that this is training only, but you still see that elevated heart rate and confusion, and we know that that’s coming. That’s just that’s just an ounce of what it would be like if it were real life,” Louderemilk said.

While the training didn’t involve a real threat, the goal was to make the scenario as realistic as possible, including Rockcastle County Schools superintendent Dr. Carri Ballinger getting an emergency call, where she then rushed to the scene to assist.

“That’s a responsibility that we take with the utmost seriousness. We go into these scenarios as if it is a real emergency. We train as if it’s a real emergency, so we’re prepared if something tragic did take place in our school,” Ballinger said.

After the ‘threat’ was neutralized, everyone huddled for an after-action review to talk about what went right and what could use improvement. This included all first responders and district staff, with both agreeing that safety takes everyone.

“Overall, I thought it went extremely well. I want to thank our community partners for coming out and working so well with us. It’s a team we’re proud of in Rockcastle County, that we work so well together with all of our community agencies,” Ballinger said.

“The fact that they that they wanted this, that they sought out training from the state police, and the fact that they’re involving other community leaders in, law enforcement, emergency management, fire and EMS, it’s clearly a top priority to them. Kudos to them,” Loudermilk added.
