Georgia politicians issue statements after 5 soldiers shot at Fort Stewart

FORT STEWART, Ga. (WRBL) — After five soldiers were shot at Fort Stewart following reports of an active shooter on Wednesday, Georgia politicians issued statements on the tragedy.

Gov. Brian Kemp took to X (Twitter) and provided his thoughts on the incident.

“As we remain in close contact with law enforcement on the ground, Marty, the girls, and I are saddened by today’s tragedy at Ft. Stewart. We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same,” Kemp said in the post.

Rep. Buddy Carter took to X to post a heartfelt message in reaction to the incident by saying:

“I am monitoring the situation at Fort Stewart. Please join me in prayers for the casualties, their families, and the brave law enforcement officers working to protect our community.”

U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff released a statement on the shooting on Wednesday:

“Today’s shooting at Ft. Stewart in Georgia is a horrific act of violence. Alisha and I send our prayers to those wounded, to their families, and to the entire Ft. Stewart community in light of this terrible act. We also express our gratitude to the first responders who have provided security and medical assistance.

My office is in close contact with leadership at Ft. Stewart to deliver all support it is within our power to provide.”

Sen. Rev. Raphael Warnock also took to X and provided a statement and said:

“I’m heartbroken to see the news of an active shooter incident at Fort Stewart today. I’m monitoring the situation closely and join all of Georgia as we pray for the safety of our servicemembers, staff, and their families.”

Lt. Gov. Burt Jones also issued a statement and provided his thoughts on the incident by saying:

“The news out of Ft. Stewart is heartbreaking. Jan and I are keeping the victims, their families and everyone impacted, including the first responders, in our thoughts and prayers. Our hearts go out to the entire community. We ask all Georgians to join us in prayer.

Grit and determination. That’s who I am. I was raised to work hard and stand up for what’s right. I’m a dad, a husband, and a man of faith. I don’t make excuses. I get things done. Georgia is my home, and I will always fight to protect what makes it great.”

Around 11:40 a.m., Maj. Charles Egan, confirmed an active shooter at Fort Stewart and eventually, it was confirmed that there were casualties in the incident that are still being assessed.

It was also confirmed that five soldiers were shot in the incident and the suspect was apprehended.

Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield (FSHAA) Commander had issued a lock down in the 2ABCT area. The lockdown includes Wright and Evans Army Airfield.

FSHAA confirmed through Facebook that Fort Stewart DoDEA schools were on lockdown as well.

“Lockdown your facility immediately, stay inside, close and lock all windows and doors. Keep telephone lines open and report accountability to your leadership,” FSHAA said on a Facebook post.

Liberty County Schools in Savannah were placed on lockdown, that included Button Gwinnett Elementary, Joseph Martin Elementary and Snelson Golden Middle School.

Appling County School System were also placed on a Level 1 lockdown and said: “We are closely monitoring the situation and remain in communication with local law enforcement.”
