The position pays between $84,000 to nearly $144,000, depending on experience – something some county residents believe is not a good use of funds.
“I thought it was ridiculous,” Mitch Lahr said. “There’s violence everywhere. What? Everyone should have a personal security guard?”
Lahr said he sees a better use of the money in something else.
“The money should go towards teachers and towards assisting the children that need help,” Lahr said. “Not security for the superintendent.”
The superintendent’s aide was not able to tell DC News Now if any threats have been made against her.
“The highly publicized tragic events around the country over the last several months illustrate the need to intensify and enhance security protocols at all organizations,” FCPS stated in an email.
Charles Banning was skeptical of the security position’s need.
“I think that Fairfax County is generally a pretty safe county, so I’m not sure it seems necessary yet,” Banning said.
While the job has its supporters, there’s concern over the cost.
“Seems a little high,” Benning said. “I wish I made that much when I was working.”
Aug. 5 is the last day to apply for the security position.
