LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) — Hundreds of cars lined up outside
Service Chevrolet Cadillac on Tuesday morning as the
Good Fight Foundation hosted its fifth annual back-to-school supply drive.
The event, spearheaded by UFC fighter Dustin Poirier and his wife, has grown significantly over the past five years, providing essential school supplies to children in the community.
“It’s been getting better every year,” Poirier said, noting improvements in efficiency and community involvement.
Over 1,200 backpacks filled with supplies from the Lafayette Parish school system supply list were distributed to families in need.
Tim Metcalf, owner of Deano’s Pizza, contributed by offering his warehouse for packing and served pizza during the event.
Poirier expressed the importance of ensuring children have the necessary tools for school, emphasizing that no child should lack essentials like markers and flashcards.
Poirier, who recently fought Max Holloway for the BMF title in his retirement fight, mentioned he is adjusting to life after the octagon.
“Feeling good. Most of my injuries from the fight are pretty much gone. My hand’s still a little sore, but everything’s good. The retirement thing comes in waves. One day I’ll be fine with it doing yard work, the next day I’ll be like, I need to be in the gym. It’s kind of like I’m battling myself, but it is what it is.”
The annual supply drive reflects Poirier’s commitment to giving back to the community, with the event’s success attributed to widespread local support.
