WESTFIELD, Ind. — The Westfield Police Department is searching for a presumably armed man who is believed to be on the run after opening fire on officers during an “active police incident” in the area of 196th Street and U.S. 31.

According to officials from the department, officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle, which then turned into a brief chase on Tuesday afternoon. A suspect then reportedly crashed his vehicle, fired multiple rounds at officers and ran away from officers.

The department said that the suspect “remains at large and is presumed to be armed.” The department described the suspect as a man with dreadlocks and wearing a dark blue or black hoodie/sweatshirt.

Officials said that law enforcement has established a perimeter from 191st Street to 196th Street and U.S. 31 to Flippins Road. Residents in the area are asked to stay indoors and lock their doors. Others are being asked to avoid the area as the situation is ongoing.

If individuals have any information on this incident, they are asked to call 911 or (317) 773-1282.
