(KRON) — A backdraft caused a fire burning in the attic of a Santa Rosa home to erupt Monday as firefighters entered through the garage, the Santa Rosa firefighters union said.

Video of the backdraft, seen in the player above, shows firefighters recoil from the explosion as bright flames burst from the roof of the home.

“A backdraft,” Santa Rosa Fire Fighters Local 1401 said on social media. “… As [firefighters] completed a ventilation hole, the backdraft in the attic forced flames through an attic scuttle and caused the ceiling to collapse in two rooms at the rear of the home.”

Firefighters responded to the blaze on Montclair Drive in eastern Santa Rosa around 3:15 a.m. All of the home’s residents escaped before firefighters arrived, the Santa Rosa Fire Department said.

“The first fire crew initiated an aggressive fire attack,” SRFD said. “Other units quickly arrived on scene to assist in extinguishment.”

More fire crews responded to the home. Despite the explosion, firefighters were able to contain the fire to the home’s attic and garage.

The fire appears accidental and was likely caused by electrical equipment in the garage, firefighters said.
