Truck thief caught on camera, charged with DUI in Stafford County: deputies

STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) — A 35-year-old Stafford man has been charged with driving under the influence (DUI) and larceny after a reported theft at a local Wawa, according to deputies.

The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) said deputies responded to a larceny report at 275 Butler Road at approximately 4:14 a.m. Surveillance footage revealed that William Sullivan stole a man’s truck while the man was entering Wawa for a cup of coffee, SCSO said.

The camera footage showed Sullivan getting into the truck, eating a quick snack and driving off. The victim’s wife was able to locate the truck using their tracking device and discovered it at a residence in South Stafford. Using this information, deputies were able to retrieve the stolen vehicle.

SCSO said Sullivan displayed overwhelming signs of intoxication and admitted to consuming “quite a few” at the time they located him.

Sullivan was able to recall having approximately five to six beers but couldn’t remember how the truck had gotten there. By this time, the deputies had already seen the camera footage and detained him, SCSO said.

Sullivan was charged with driving under the influence, second offense and grand larceny and is being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
