State hunting, trapping licenses on sale for 2025-26 season

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Hunting and trapping licenses, as well as Deer Management Permits, are now on sale for the 2025-2026 season, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). They can be purchased online, in-person or by phone.

“With an estimated half a million New Yorkers looking to take part in the long-standing traditions of hunting and trapping this fall, excitement is building and preparation for the upcoming seasons already underway,” said DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton.

In order to buy a license, hunters and trappers should have the following materials ready:

Hunting and trapping license materials

  • Complete contact information, including name, address, email address and telephone number
  • Proof of residency, such as a driver’s license or non-driver’s ID with a valid New York State address
  • Proof of hunter or trapper education certification or a copy of a previous license, if not already entered in DEC’s automated licensing system
  • DEC customer ID number, if applicable
  • Valid credit card if purchasing by phone or internet

Hunting and trapping licenses will be valid from September 1 through August 31. The annual fishing licenses are valid for 365 days from the date of purchase.

All first-time hunters, bowhunters and trappers are required to pass one or more hunter education training courses before they can purchase a license. They are available both online and in person.

All in-person classes, which will feature a more hands-on experience, are free of charge but space may be limited. A list of courses, registration instructions and study materials can be found on the DEC website.

Online courses cost $24.95 and those who pass will receive a hunter education certificate. Participants must be New York State residents. The online course can be found at the Hunter-Ed website.

Licenses and permits can be purchased on the DEC website, at any of the DEC’s license-issuing agents or by calling (866) 933-2257. Deer Management Permits can be purchased through October 1.

The 2025-26 Hunting and Trapping Regulations Guide is available on the DEC Hunting webpage or at license issuing agents. Information for hunters with a disability can be found on the Permits for Hunters with Disabilities page.
