ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Local police and first responders in Rockford now have a new resource to assist individuals with drug or mental health issues through the Northwest Illinois Deflection Initiative.

The initiative was launched at a kick-off event held at the Nordlof Center in downtown Rockford on Tuesday. It aims to connect those in need with essential services such as treatment, housing, and food.

Koren VanderWeele from the TASC Center for Health & Justice emphasized the importance of approaching individuals with empathy and understanding, noting that many did not choose their current lifestyle and may have underlying issues.

The Northwest Illinois Deflection Initiative provides specialists who work with police officers and first responders to refer individuals to appropriate services. This approach is intended to offer support and resources to those facing challenges related to drug use or mental health.

Program administrators highlight that officers are often the first to encounter individuals in need of help, making their role crucial in the deflection process.

TASC, which is involved in the initiative, now serves more than half of the counties in Illinois, indicating a broad reach and potential impact across the state.

The Northwest Illinois Deflection Initiative represents a proactive effort to address drug and mental health issues in the community, with the goal of increasing access to treatment and support services.
