According to the Indiana State Police, the crash unfolded in the southbound lanes of Interstate 65 overnight near exit 220 to State Road 14.
While it is currently unclear what led to the incident, troopers said three vehicles were involved in the crash, including one that was loaded with peat moss, which troopers said kept reigniting while they worked the scene.
At least one person involved was killed in the crash, though it is unclear how they were involved.
The hours-long cleanup continued into the morning hours, eventually causing some backups for rush hour commuters.
According to troopers, all southbound traffic is currently being diverted at exit 220 while crews continue to clean up the scene.
Troopers advise commuters to use U.S. 41 or U.S. 231 as alternatives and there is currently no timeline for reopening.
