Recent Jackson shootout could be connected to other shootings

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Police released new information about a shootout that occurred in a South Jackson neighborhood this weekend.

According to Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade, the shootout occurred in the Will-O-Wood subdivision on August 2. He said there’s a possibility that the shootout was connected to a shooting last weekend on Wiggins Road and a shootout in the Brookhollow neighborhood a few weeks ago.

The following suspects were arrested:

  • Deshawn Gross, 21 – Charged with five counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling
  • Desmond Hudson, 22 – Charged with five counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling
  • Jamorris Lewis, 21 – Charged with five counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling and convicted felon/firearm
  • Octavius Robinson, 18 – Charged with five counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling
  • Rushoderic Williams, 19 – Charged with five counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling

Gross, Hudson, Lewis, and Robinson appeared in court on August 4 and were denied bond. Williams is hospitalized and will appear in court upon his release.

Police said the shooting started on Redwood Drive between two groups of suspects, who were at odds with each other. They were allegedly traveling to a private party at a home on Sundew Place. The shootout resulted in multiple homes and vehicles being shot into.

Wade said the city could start requiring permits for large parties.

“We’ve got to look at what these private parties look like and whether we need to require these individuals to start having permits for private parties. When you have large crowds coming to your community, where they’re going to be playing music, where they’re going to be parking on the streets, because the private parties are elevated to criminal activity in our community,” he said.

The police chief said some increased security in the area would include officers who patrol in unmarked cars.
