The president says the $200 million project is set to break ground next month and will not use taxpayer dollars. Last week, the president was asked if he would release a list of donors and he said, “Yeah, I’ll do that.”
George Washington University political analyst Casey Burgat says White House tweaks are not unusual presidential endeavors.
“From a putting green to a basketball court with Obama, they want things to be done to the White House to keep it up and make it their home because they are living it,” said Burgat.
Burgat says typically presidents consult with boards, commissions or Congress.
“Let’s just say he’s less concerned about that institutionalized process,” said Burgat.
The last president to oversee a massive renovation at the White House was President Harry Truman in 1948.
