OGDEN, Utah (ABC4) — Thirteen people have been displaced and an apartment complex suffered $1 million in damages following a Monday night fire near the 300 block of 32nd Street in Ogden.

Deputy Fire Chief Mike Slater said fire crews responded to the fire just after 11 p.m. on Aug. 4 and found smoke and flames coming from the windows and roof of the multi-story apartment building.

The apartments were quickly evacuated, and crews took a defensive approach, tackling the fire from the outside to protect surrounding buildings

“Once fire conditions improved, crews reentered the building to extinguish fire in hidden roof lines and knee walls,” Slater said in a media release. “Due to the rapid response and coordinated efforts of the crews on scene, the fire was successfully extinguished.”

The cause and origin of the fire are still under investigation, according to Slater. The fire had consumed a large portion of the attic space of the apartment building.

The Red Cross was on scene and assisted the 13 residents who were displaced by the fire. One firefighter was treated on scene for heat exhaustion.

“We commend the professionalism and teamwork displayed by all responding personnel, whose actions helped protect the surrounding community,” said Slater.
