Cojoe, a 6-foot-6, 335-pounder, was on the path to potentially win the starting spot at right tackle, but now the injury throws a wrench into things. It certainly hurts the team’s depth at the position and could elevate freshman Brandon Baker into a larger role, possibly becoming the starter.
Cojoe appeared in four games last season, playing in the season opener against Colorado State, along with games versus UTSA, Louisiana Monroe and Florida. The Grand Prairie, Texas, native was a top-100 tackle by 247Sports when coming out of Mansfield Timberview High School.
The Texas offensive line is perhaps the biggest question mark for head coach Steve Sarkisian as training camp rolls on. With seniors DJ Campbell and Cole Hutson, along with sophomore Trevor Goosby, to anchor the unit, the remaining spots are up for grabs.
“We’ve got some guys with a little less history, maybe a little bit more to prove on the front end,” said Texas offensive line coach Kyle Flood on Aug. 29, the day before training camp began. “I think that can be a great motivator for them, for sure.”
Flood said Cojoe was practicing at both tackle positions, and that’s something Flood does with most of his guys, he said.
