Lone Fancy Farm Democrat takes on Comer, as GOP allies hint at Kentucky representative’s future

KENTUCKY (FOX 56) — While many eyes were on Kentucky’s US Senate candidates at this weekend’s Fancy Farm Picnic, there was another story to watch in the race for Kentucky’s 1st Congressional District.

“Let’s make some noise for the dem—I mean, the guy running against Jamie Comer,” emcee Ashli Watts quipped.

The lone Democrat to speak at this year’s picnic arguably faced the most hostility on the stage, not only receiving swipes over the party’s near non-attendance at the event but also facing down a largely Republican crowd.

LATEST KENTUCKY NEWS:

“We have to build this new table because James Comer doesn’t give us a seat at his table; he benefits when small farms and communities failed,” John “Drew” Williams said during his speech, prompting a roar of boos across the pavilion at the mention of Comer’s name.

Williams is seeking to unseat incumbent Comer to represent western Kentucky in Congress. The political outsider is a Murray State grad and has a background working in a family-owned construction business.

Why did this Democrat break with others and show up? He told FOX 56, simply, that this is home.

“This is what matters to me: the community space, like the community service that this place is putting on, and the upliftment of our spaces. And so, like, that’s why I’m here. I’ve been coming to this since middle school. I live in Marshall County, Kentucky. I live right next door,’ he said.

“My opponent next year is here, and I honestly don’t know his name, but he is sitting up here all alone,” Comer said, jabbing Williams. He ended his speech jokingly gifting William an endorsement from Joe Biden “signed by the autopen.”

LATEST KENTUCKY LISTS AND RANKINGS:

Comer has easily held the seat since being elected to it in 2016, often receiving more than 70% of the vote. As Comer eyes reelection to Congress in 2026, his fellow Republicans are signaling a run for Kentucky’s highest office could be soon to follow.

“Aren’t we ready to send a Republican back to the governor’s mansion? Speaking of, I thank God every day for James Comer, but doesn’t Gov. Comer sound better?” Agriculture Commissioner Jonathan Shell asked during his speech, which was met with loud approval of cheers from the crowd.
