According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers received a report of shots fired near Pershing Avenue around 10:15 p.m. While officers were making their way to the scene to investigate, they were given additional information that indicated a person in the area was seen calling for help.
When police arrived on the scene, area residents helped them locate a man with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. IMPD reported that the man was transported from the scene to a local hospital in stable condition after officers found him.
Upon further investigation, police learned that the shooting likely stemmed from a robbery of some kind. Per IMPD, the victim told investigators that he crawled from the shooting scene — which officers later determined to be the 2200 block of West Washington Street — to an alley near Pershing Street.
Once the victim made it to the alley near Pershing Street, area residents assisted him and called first responders.
Police detained a person of interest during their investigation of the shooting. Investigators are, however, still encouraging those with information on the shooting to call IMPD at (317) 327-3435.
Alternatively, tipsters who wish to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at (317) 327-3475.
