ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — Former Northern Illinois University running back and former Packers running back LeShon Johnson is likely going to be spending more time in prison. He has been convicted of operating a dogfighting operation.
A federal jury in Oklahoma has convicted him on six counts on possession of a dog for use in animal fighting, selling a dog for use in animal fighting, and for the sale, transport and delivery of a dog for use in animal fighting. Johnson was arrested earlier this year when federal charges were brought against him. Last October, federal authorities seized 190 dogs that had been used in the operation. That is the largest number of dogs ever seized from one individual.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi stated in a release from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Public Affairs the following: “He (Johnson) profited off the misery of innocent animals, and he will face severe consequences for his vile crimes.”
FBI Director Kash Patel stated: “The FBI will not stand for those who perpetuate the despicable crime of dogfighting. Thanks to the hard work of our law enforcement partners, those who continue to engage in organized animal fighting and cruelty will face justice.”
Johnson will be sentenced on a future date. He faces up to five years in prison and fines of up to $250,000 on each of the six counts.
As a junior at NIU in 1992, Johnson, nicknamed “The Cowboy” because he is from Oklahoma, rushed for 1,338 yards and six touchdowns. As a senior for the Huskies in 1993 he rushed for 1,976 yards and 12 touchdowns. He led the nation in rushing, and he was named a first team All-American.
Johnson was selected by the Packers in the third round of the 1994 NFL Draft. He played parts of two seasons with the Packers. He then played for the Cardinals and the Giants.
Johnson is currently 54 years old.
