Kortnie Benson Barajas, 33, was found deceased in her vehicle on the Kyhv Peak Road
“Kortnie’s passing left a deep void in our lives,” America Miller, Barajas’ sister-in-law, told ABC4.com.
At about 7 a.m., Provo Police were notified of an accident on the road. Officers quickly conducted a brief search where they found Barajas inside an overturned vehicle approximately 50 yards away from the roadway.
“She was really into helping and taking care of others,” Miller said, adding that she was happiest when she was outdoors.
According to police, on the morning of the crash, a 33-year-old man checked into a Provo emergency room with head and leg injuries. The man told staff that he had been involved in a crash on the Kyhv Peak Road and that someone else, who had been unresponsive, was still in the vehicle.
Miller says her sister-in-law had gone camping with some friends a few days earlier but was expected back by Friday to take her eight-year-old twin daughters laser tagging.
She’s unsure who the person was that was in the car with her at the time of the crash. Their relation is also unclear. However, Barajas’ family believes she was on her way back from the camping trip when the rollover happened.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
“She went through a lot of battles in her lifetime… but she was definitely focusing on her family, and being a great mom to her kids,” Miller said. “She was just a fun person to be around.”
Barajas leaves behind her husband and five children. She and her husband would have celebrated their twelfth wedding anniversary the day after the accident took her.
A GoFundMe has been set up to support her children and funeral expenses.
