after an extremely turbulent flight heading for Amsterdam out of Salt Lake City
sent 25 people to the hospital. ABC4 spoke with Kristine, her daughter Elizabeth, and Kristine’s lawyer Evan regarding the incident.

Kristine Weitz and her daughter Elizabeth were headed for Amsterdam when their plane suddenly began rattling uncontrollably, sending people slamming into the plastic overhangs and food and drinks spilling into laps.

“I’ve been flying for 40 years. I’ve never experienced anything this horrific in my life,” Kristine said. “I’ve never thought, ‘Oh, we’re finished’ … and I’ve been in terrible situations flying because that’s what I do. I fly all over the planet.”

Her daughter Elizabeth also described the chaos, saying, “A lady got burned with coffee to the left, and there was just food and drinks flying everywhere … I thought we were done. I just started praying honestly.”

Elizabeth said she could see people’s heads hitting the ceiling, her own mother hitting the ceiling so hard with her head that it cracked the light above her. Kristine told ABC4 she blacked out for a moment from the force.

Shortly after, they said the plane ascended rapidly before dropping in what felt like a complete free fall. Luckily, the pilot was able to stabilize and make an emergency landing at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. There, 25 people were taken to hospitals in what Kristine and her daughter said was also a chaotic event.

“It needs to be talked about,” Kristine said. “This should never happen, and they need to find out what happened on that flight.”

Kristine’s lawyer Evan Oshan told ABC4 the plane likely dropped the height equivalent of almost two Empire State Buildings. The FAA is now conducting an investigation to figure out what happened. Once that concludes, Evan said they’ll have a better idea of how to proceed.

“I don’t want to get in the middle of their investigation,” Evan said. “What I’m most interested in is getting to the truth.”

Regardless, Evan said there’ no question this was a traumatic event, and injured victims may suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
