FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Three teenagers are recovering after being shot at a party in northeast Fresno early Sunday morning, Fresno police said.

A spokesperson for the department said officers were in the area at the time the disturbance began at a home in the 3900 block of East Ashcroft Avenue, near 9th Street.

Officers witnessed many cars in the neighborhood and had several units responding to what was initially a call about a loud party.

At one point, the department’s dispatch received multiple reports that several people had been shot at that party.

Investigators said when the shooting occurred, the environment became chaotic, and people scattered.

Police said they arrived to find three people shot in the home’s backyard, including an 18-year-old male, and two juveniles.

All three were struck in their lower parts of their bodies and were transported to an area hospital.

Investigators said the injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.

According to police, the incident stemmed from a party that had gone viral on social media, leading to uninvited people arriving. At some point, a fight broke out, and someone produced a gun and started shooting.

“I think this might underscore the fact that going to some location, especially if you’re not necessarily invited, could end up in tragedy. We’re very fortunate that nobody else was struck by gunfire, or that we didn’t actually have a homicide. So…Serious. Unfortunate. Alarming…is the best way to describe things,” said Fresno Police Lieutenant Paul Cervantes.

The Street Violence Bureau’s Felony Assault Unit is working the case, and said about a dozen partygoers stayed at the scene and provided their accounts of what happened.

Currently, they believe two male suspects are thought to be involved.

Police are unsure as to how many people were in attendance, but said the home’s owner is cooperative with the investigation.

If anyone has information about this case they are asked to call Fresno Police Department’s non-emergency line at 559-621-7000.
