OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY) — The Opelousas Police Department is actively investigating a shooting that occurred in the 800 block of St. Cyr Street, leaving man with multiple injuries to his lower extremities.

Officials said while on routine patrol in the area, officers heard multiple gunshots ring out and proceeded toward the location. When they arrived, officers discovered a male victim lying on the ground. Officers rendered aid at the scene until emergency medical personnel arrived.

Officials said the victim was sent to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

Investigators are currently working to gather evidence and speak with witnesses who were in the area at the time of the shooting.
