Mission Viejo shelter uses live music to soothe homeless pets

A 12-year-old from Houston is bringing a musical touch to an Orange County animal shelter.

The Mission Viejo Animal Services Center is launching Wild Tunes, a nonprofit program started by Yuvi Agarwal, a young musician who believes live music can help stressed shelter animals feel more at ease, and more adoptable.

The program officially kicks off Tuesday, Aug. 5, at noon at the shelter’s Hillcrest location.

Founded by Agarwal in Texas, Wild Tunes enlists volunteer musicians and singers to play for shelter animals, with the idea that soft melodies and live music can create a calming environment. The goal is to help animals build positive associations with humans, making them more comfortable, and more likely to be adopted.

“Music has the power to calm, connect, and heal,” said Agarwal, who plays multiple instruments and is an avid animal lover. “When pets are routinely exposed to music, it helps them become more comfortable around humans, which ultimately increases their chances of finding forever homes.”

Mission Viejo officials said the program will also offer benefits for people, including shelter staff and volunteers.

“We look forward to partnering with Wild Tunes to introduce a new form of enrichment powered by music that has the potential to improve the experience for the animals, improve staff well-being, and enhance the involvement of volunteers,” said Brynn Lavison, the city’s Animal Services Director.
