PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Dogs in need of new homes came to Portland and Salem after their shelters in Texas were impacted by recent intense floods.

Sixteen dogs arrived in Oregon on Thursday, July 31 for their new chapter with the Oregon Humane Society, where caregivers hope they will find adoptive families.

“As soon as we heard the news about the flooding, we immediately reached out to offer our help,” Co-Interim President and CEO Steve Kochis said. “Oregon Humane Society is a part of an animal welfare ecosystem — we show up and support each other in emergencies.”

The dogs came from three Central Texas shelters including Austin Pets Alive!, Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter, and Concho Valley PAWS.

Now that these dogs are in the care of OHS, the shelter has asked for public donations to help cover the costs of their medical needs.

So far, two of the 16 dogs were adopted over the weekend.
