The incident occurred in the 3600 block of Lampton Avenue on Sunday, August 3.
Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said Kuaron Hilliard, 29, left his son alone at the home, and the child found the unsecured gun and was shot. The child’s body was transported to the Mississippi State Crime Lab for an autopsy, and a death investigation is underway. Wade said the weapon will be tested.
The police chief said the child was staying with his father for the weekend. Hilliard, who is being held in the Hinds County Detention Center, was charged with felony child neglect. He appeared in court on August 4 and received a $50,000 bond.
The victim has not been identified.
