Police say the incident happened around 6:15 a.m. when the off-duty officer was confronted by multiple armed offenders in the 4800 block of South Bishop Street. A gunfire exchange ensued, according to police, and the offenders then got in a white-colored sedan and fled in an unknown direction.
The off-duty officer sustained a minor hand injury from broken glass and was taken to an area hospital for observation, police say. No other injuries were reported, and CPD’s Investigative Response Team arrived at the scene to investigate.
The specifics of the incident, including the comprehensive use of force investigation, are being investigated by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), with the full cooperation of CPD. The officer involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum period of 30 days.
