Athletic trainers’ responsibilities extend far beyond game-day care. “We’re the Swiss Army knife of medical services,” said Lance Champagne, an athletic training supervisor with Ochsner LSU Health who serves Grambling State University and Centenary College.
“We do it all. Whether it’s preventive care like taping or handling wound care, or responding to injuries during a game or practice, we’re there from start to finish. We assess, plan, and decide if something can be managed on-site or if it requires further medical attention. And beyond the physical injuries, we’re also addressing mental health issues and a range of other conditions. It’s all-encompassing.”
Whether assisting collegiate athletes or high school players, athletic trainers are deeply embedded within the team dynamic. They are a trusted resource for both coaches and players, ensuring that athletes can focus on their game with the confidence that they are well-supported.
The critical work performed by athletic trainers often happens behind the scenes, but their impact resonates deeply across every level of sports. From prevention to recovery, their contributions not only keep athletes safe but also enable them to perform at their peak.
