(KRON) — The Alum Rock Union Elementary School District superintendent was fired after less than a full school year on the job, leaving parents and teachers in shock.

The firing was discussed during an emergency meeting held by the school board on Saturday morning, with nearly unanimous support from board members.

“It did come as a shock and surprise,” said district teacher Veronica Talton, expressing her belief that the superintendent was not given a fair chance.

Last school year, the district closed four elementary schools and two middle schools, consolidating others due to low enrollment.

Despite the superintendent’s efforts to navigate the district and increase enrollment, the board did not provide specific reasons for his termination.

In a letter to the community, the board stated that the decision was made with “much consideration and deliberation” and was within their rights.

Delia Oseguera Navarro, whose child is starting sixth grade soon, criticized the board’s lack of transparency, saying, “Actions speak louder than words.”
