Yosemite is waiving entrance fees to celebrate recent law

YOSEMITE, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Yosemite, Sequoia, Kings Canyon, and national parks across the country will be waiving entrance fees on Monday to celebrate the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA).

The act was passed on Aug. 4, 2020, to “expand recreation opportunities in national parks and other public lands.” The decision also secured funding for the parks.

GAOA established the National Parks and Public Land Legacy Restoration Fund, which provides the National Park Service (NPS) with revenue from energy development to make enhancements.

The legislation also secured permanent funding for the existing Land and Water Conservation Fund, which receives up to $900 million a year from offshore oil and natural gas royalties to assist in the acquisition of essential lands and provides states with money to invest in local conservation and recreation opportunities.
