NC generally approves of President Trump, Gov. Stein, according to new Emerson College poll

(WGHP) — The approval and disapproval for President Donald Trump and some of his bigger policies are fairly evenly split in North Carolina, according to new polling.

Emerson College conducted a poll for Nexstar of 1,000 North Carolinians, of whom 31.1% were Democrats, 35.9% were Republicans and 32.9% were registered as unaffiliated or with a different party.

The results show that approval for the president sits at 46.4%, while disapproval is at 43.5%. Of the respondents, 10.1% described themselves as neutral or having no opinion on the president.

Of the 410 people who say they voted for Trump, 91.5% approve of his job as president. Only 3.7% of Trump voters now say they disapprove of his job as president and 4.9% say they feel neutral or have no opinion.

Of the 381 who voted for former Vice President Kamala Harris, 86.6% disapprove of Trump’s job as president, with 8.7% saying they approve and 4.7% saying they feel neutral or have no opinion.

The opinion of his deportation policy is similarly split, with 45.3% approving and 43.6% disapproving of the policy, indicating that more people broadly approve of Trump than they do the aggressive stance he has taken on deporting migrants since taking office in January. 11.1% called themselves neutral in that poll.

By contrast, far fewer people in North Carolina disapprove of the job Governor Josh Stein is doing. 40.8% said they approve of the Democratic governor, while only 24.6% disapprove; however, a larger percentage of respondents called themselves neutral to Stein, at 34.6%.

Most registered Democrats said they approve of Stein at 62.1%, with 15.1% saying they disapprove and 22.8% saying they are neutral or have no opinion.

While one might expect registered Republicans to disapprove of the Democratic governor, only 39.0% said they disapprove. About 26.5% of registered Republicans say they approve of Stein and 35.5% said they are neutral or have no opinion.

This division reflects the broader voting trends of North Carolina, which chose Trump in the presidential race yet Democrats, including Stein, Lt. Gov. Rachel Hunt and State Superintendent Mo Green, in state-level races.

Most, 48.9%, of the respondents who are registered as unaffiliated or with a different party felt neutral or had no opinion on the governor, with 38.3% approving and 19.0% disapproving.

Out of all respondents, about 11.7% said they approve of both Trump and Stein, and about 5.5% said they disapprove of both.
