Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten said deputies responded to home on Highway 61 North in Natchez in the early morning hours of July 31. When deputies arrived, they found a woman who had been shot in her left forearm, with an exit wound in her upper back.
The victim was transported to Merit Health Natchez and later airlifted to another medical facility for further treatment.
Patten said early reports suggested the shooting was accidental, but investigators later discovered conflicting information at the hospital. The victim said following a disagreement with her boyfriend, she stepped outside the home to clear her head. She said when she returned inside, she was shot in the back by her boyfriend.
Deputies identified the boyfriend as Taylor Fleming. He was detained at the scene. The sheriff said Fleming confessed that the shooting had not occurred as initially described.
Fleming was charged with aggravated assault domestic violence and tampering with evidence.
