West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey signed House Bill 2003 in April.
The bill prohibits the use of personal devices during the school day because of concerns with distractions and students’ mental health.
West Virginia is not the only state enacting this law. California, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Minnesota, Ohio, South Carolina and Virginia are also banning cell phone use in schools.
The decision comes down to the individual county’s board of education.
Officials with Kanawha County Schools told said on Wednesday that they are still allowing public comment, and no decision has been made at this time.
Schools in Kanawha County begin on Aug. 15. Click here for the full list of dates for all counties in West Virginia.
