According to the Meigs County Sheriff’s Office, people fishing at the Racine boat levy called 911 on Thursday, July 31, after seeing a body in the river.
The sheriff’s office says that, as the river falls under West Virginia’s jurisdiction, they notified authorities in the state. The New Haven Volunteer Fire Department, West Virginia State Police, Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Meigs County Sheriff’s Office and Meigs County Coroner’s Office all responded.
According to Meigs County Sheriff Scott Fitch, the body was pulled from the river, and investigators found the person was male and had several “identifying features,” including a distinctive tattoo. The body was then taken to the West Virginia State Medical Examiner’s Office for a positive identification.
While authorities are still waiting for official confirmation, Fitch said a close relative of a man who went missing this weekend while visiting family told authorities that the tattoo resembled their missing loved one’s tattoo.
