Part of the message from Principal Casey Rogers on July 31 reads as follows:
“During a random check this morning of several classrooms in the English hallway, a teacher observed three students entering a restroom instead of reporting to the designated area for the sweep. The teacher immediately notified an assistant principal, who responded promptly. Upon entering the restroom, the assistant principal discovered an unloaded handgun in plain sight.”
According to the message, the school resource officer and school administration identified the students involved, and “appropriate action was taken.”
At least one student is been charged with possession of a handgun, according to the announcement.
Parents and guardians were urged to speak with students about school safety and consequences.
“We will continue to utilize safety measures such as weapons detectors, security cameras, and increased supervision to prevent and detect the presence of contraband items on campus,” the statements reads.
