One dead after multi-vehicle collision in West Valley City, road closures in place

This is a developing story. ABC4 will update this post as new information becomes available.

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (ABC4) — One person is dead after a chain-reaction crash in West Valley City that happened after a driver was weaving in and out of traffic.

West Valley City Police Department responded to a fatal car accident around 7 p.m. near the area of Stanton Drive and 3500 South, which involved three vehicles.

According to Lieutenant Jason Vincent, with the West Valley City Police Department, the area was experiencing significant traffic congestion. A male driver appeared to be in a hurry and was allegedly weaving in and out of traffic, according to eyewitnesses.

The driver collided with one vehicle, causing a chain that affected a third vehicle. Unfortunately, the driver of the first vehicle died on-scene. Reportedly, some officers were nearby and were able to quickly respond before the call was dispatched. The officers attempted lifesaving measures but were unsuccessful.

The drivers of the two other vehicles involved were not injured and received minor damage to their vehicles. Lt. Vincent said they are cooperating fully with the investigation.

Reportedly, the deceased driver was wearing a seatbelt, and airbags were deployed in the collision.

Police also said it does not appear that impairment was a factor, but they do suspect that speed was a contributing factor, though the investigation is still ongoing. They have not released the identity of the victim or anyone else involved.

Currently, 3500 S is closed from Stanton Drive to around 4800 West. Lt. Vincent said the road will remain closed until around 10 p.m. tonight
