“Clearly, we need to do more than just throw money at this problem, as the Governor likes to do,” said Rep. Tom Weber (R-McHenry) during a press conference. “Children at the risk of being abused are the very definition of our most vulnerable. Yet they are being failed in the worst possible way.”
State Representatives Tom Weber, Nicole La Ha, and Steve Reick have introduced several bills aimed at reforming DCFS operations. One of the proposed bills, HB1797, seeks to ensure that all reports of child abuse are immediately shared with law enforcement agencies.
Currently, only specific categories of abuse reports prompt automatic notification to police. This change is intended to improve the responsiveness and accountability of DCFS in handling abuse cases.
Rep. Steve Reick is advocating for additional measures, including HB2497 and HB2498, which focus on improving transparency and workload equity within DCFS. These bills aim to establish a comprehensive caseload tracking system and require DCFS to submit annual reports detailing active case files and staffing ratios.
The lawmakers have urged Gov. JB Pritzker and DCFS Director Heidi Mueller to implement the recommendations from the Auditor General’s report and support legislation that prioritizes transparency, caseworker accountability, and child safety.
