Surveillance video recorded 41-year-old Casey Way as she walked her two dogs on the night of July 17, alongside her boyfriend, Allan Wallace.
The couple was walking on East 14th Street when a man stepped out of a vehicle and asked for directions. As they continued talking, the man asked Way and Wallace if they were in a gang, fired a gun, and laughed, the boyfriend told KRON4.
“She hit the ground and I turned around to try to help her. She was bleeding way too bad,” Wallace recalled.
Wallace described the killer as someone who was out “hunting” for victims.
“Hunting people down … for what? For no reason whatsoever. And then to just laugh and walk away. That guy needs to be put in a box somewhere,” the boyfriend said.
Police later tracked down a 21-year-old San Jose man, Rohith Sunil, in Dublin and arrested him. The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged Sunil with murder.
San Leandro police Lt. Matthew Barajas said, “There’s no indication that the victim or witness knew the suspect. We don’t have any connection.”
Prosecutors said the murder weapon was a stolen semi-automatic handgun. If convicted, Sunil could face 50 years to life in state prison, according to the district attorney’s office.
Wallace was not injured in the shooting, but the emotional toll has been devastating. He described Way as his best friend and his “light.” Losing her left him in the dark.
“Our two worlds collided. I love that girl more than anything. She was my motivation in life. She’s gone and that’s what I get to deal with now,” the boyfriend told KRON4.
Way’s body was donated to science, according to Wallace, underscoring the giving person she was in both life and death.
