Federal cuts cause concern for CEO of food program in Prince George's County
LANDOVER, Md. (DC News Now)Imperfect produce are getting a second chance to feed families in Prince George’s County.

Hungry Harvest in Landover provides free meals and delivers thousands of boxes of fresh vegetables and fruits to consumers’ homes, filling the bellies of members of the community.

Federal programs, like Medicaid and the SNAP program, help the organization fulfill its mission. However, proposed cuts could hurt the business. Hungry Harvest CEO Evan Lutz said he’s hoping that Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-Md.) can help address concerns.

“In Prince George’s County, there is a lot of food insecurity, and we are proud to be located here to focus on our work,” Lutz said. “But we are concerned about cuts in the future that will cut back on the work that we are doing and ultimately lead to less food delivered to folks in Prince George’s County and across Maryland, so we are hoping the congressman can help us from the federal level.”

Ivey toured the 60,000 square foot facility on Tuesday and said he is seeing what he can do to help this business continue serving the community.

“We’ve been fighting this in Congress for a long time,” Ivey said. “Republicans know that millions of people stand to lose their access to food. That will expand hunger issues and insecurity across the country, like SNAP programs and school lunches, and it will hurt the most vulnerable people, like the elderly and children.”

The food program also provides home delivery for parents of school students in Prince George’s County. Hungry Harvest provides up to four million pounds of food every year in Maryland.
