According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the incident happened around 5:30 a.m. near 38th Street and Boulevard Place.
Officers arrived to find a woman lying in the road with traumatic injuries. She was taken to an area hospital in critical condition but died from her injuries, according to Tommy Thompson, a public information officer for IMPD.
A vehicle hit the woman, Thompson said. The driver remained at the scene and has cooperated with police. The individual went to a hospital for a blood draw, which is standard procedure in serious crashes.
The driver displayed no signs of impairment. Thompson described the crash as a “tragic incident.”
The woman was walking on the northbound side of the road. The driver tried to swerve to avoid her but was too late and ended up hitting a utility pole.
The crash remains under investigation.
