The most charming Bay Area town you’ve never heard of

(KRON) – Small towns can often be overlooked, especially in the Bay Area, where the big three (San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose) are primarily recognized. However, a travel magazine, Travel & Leisure, highlighted a Sonoma County town with less than 3,000 residents.

The travel publication noted Penngrove, nestled between Petaluma and Cotati, as one of the best small towns to live in the United States, according to their findings.

Travel & Leisure referred to the city as “charming.” Penngrove Cares’ website said the town is “where the past and present dance together in the shade of redwoods and beneath wide country skies.”

Penngrove was originally home to the Coast Miwok people. In 1870, the town was named after Pennsylvania settlers and the abundance of native tree groves.

The picturesque townlet has historic landmarks, such as Penngrove Railroad Station, Penngrove Community Church and the Penngrove Hatchery.

Per the publication, the study’s factors included access to health and educational facilities, green spaces, affordable housing and cultural activities.
